The impact of Bullying in the workplace

  1. People are often hesitant to make a complaint; why do you think this is?
    • Workplace bullying is verbal, physical, social or psychological abuse by your employer (or manager), another person or group of people at work. Workplace bullying can happen in any type of workplace, from offices to shops, cafes, restaurants, workshops, community groups and government organisations. However, people are often hesitant to make a complaint because it is not an easy thing to do when you already feeling bad about what happened and they don't want their families and friends to worry about them. Think that those who care for them may already have enough problems, without them being a problem, too. Also, people feel scared and believed that things will get worse for the target if they tell.
  2. Is it possible for people who file complaints to be victimised beyond the original incident? How could this happen? What are some ways organisations and individual managers can help people feel more comfortable to make a claim?
    • Organisations provide induction information, awareness sessions, in-house newsletters or displayed on notice board and have discussions at staff meetings to introduce more details about how to claim bullying. Also, ecourage workers to seek advice from workplace harassment contact office or experts at workplace.
  3. What can managers do to create a culture where people feel safe to stand up for their rights to equal treatment and being treated with respect and dignity?
    • he manager/supervisor  should define workplace bullying policy for all staff and provide a prevention policy in place to ensure employees fully understand the issue and follow the safety procedures to avoid hazards. Also, prepare training and education program for all workers. This can increase more aware of their own actions and the actions of those around them.
